If you’ve watched the TV mini-series “Shogun” you’ll know that one Lord out fought and out witted the other feudal lords to unify Japan after several centuries of brutal fighting. That Lord, Tokugawa, ruled that all the other feudal lords had to move to Tokyo, but their families had to stay in their respective castles. They were not allowed to travel. Stuck at home the families looked for a way to ease their boredom.
The development of stroll gardens large in scale and created for enjoyment meant that these stay-at-home families could experience the idea of traveling. Our own Japanese Garden in the Washington Park Arboretum was designed as just that type of stroll garden dating from the early years of the Edo Period (1603-1868).
