SUMMARY:Member 2 Member: Kathy Edwards on Philanthropy (MEMBERS + FRIENDS)
DESCRIPTION:The WaWF collective is a wealth of knowledge\, experience\, perspective\, and expertise. We’re excited to continue this Member focused series: Member 2 Member\, where members are invited to nominate their fellow members to present on a subject with which they hold special proficiency or expertise. \nJoin us Thursday\, May 8th\, at 4:30PM to hear from one of WaWF’s longtime members\, Kathy Edwards\, on her life’s work of philanthropy and the decision to sunset her family foundation\, Cedarmere Foundation. Kathy will be joined in conversation by  fellow WaWF member\, Mercedes Luna. \nKathy Edwards attained a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems and spent 30 years doing organization development work with nonprofit organizations throughout the US and internationally.  She has had numerous articles on nonprofit governance and leadership published in regional and national publications. Kathy has also served on numerous nonprofit boards including the Washington Women’s Foundation\, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest\, World Neighbors (an international development organization headquartered in Oklahoma City)\, and Saint George’s School (Spokane\, WA).  After retiring in 2005\, Kathy and her husband\, George\, founded the Cedarmere Foundation.  For the past 18 years\, Kathy has served as the foundation’s President and led its efforts to strengthen the leadership and infrastructure of nonprofit organizations in the Puget Sound region through capacity building grants.  In recent years\, under Kathy’s leadership\, the foundation has narrowed its focus by being intentional about building the capacity of BIPOC-led or BIPOC-serving nonprofits in order to better meet the needs of under-resourced communities and give their members a voice.  Kathy served two years as the co-chair of the Washington Statewide Capacity Collaborative in 2021-2022. She and her board have recently completed the process of distributing the foundation’s entire endowment through grants to capacity building organizations and sunsetting the Cedarmere Foundation. \nMercedes Luna (Tlingit) is the Associate Director for Advancement at the University of Washington School of Nursing. In her work as a fundraiser\, Mercedes is passionate about changing the field of philanthropy to create a more equitable and just future for the next generation. As a fourth-generation Seattleite\, Yonsei (fourth-generation Japanese)\, Filipino American\, and enrolled member of the Tlingit tribe\, her mixed heritage fuels her\, and she is proud to volunteer and support her local communities and cultural preservation. In addition to being an active member of the Washington Women’s Foundation\, Mercedes also serves on the Executive Board of Trustees of Look\, Listen + Learn TV and on the Pulling Together Committee of Friends of Waterfront Seattle. \nClick here to register for M2M with Kathy Edwards! \nPlease email programs@wawomensfdn.org with your Member 2 Member nominations and any questions about the event. SUMMARY:Tour in Place: The Fog Beyond the Mountains (MEMBERS + FRIENDS)

For this session\, we unfold the story of race in the Pacific Northwest. Join the WaWF community on Thursday\, February 20th at the Washington Women’s Foundation in the afternoon\, from 2 to 5PM! This is a rescheduled event from November 2024. \nClick here to register for The Fog Beyond the Mountains! \nThis in-person event is open to WaWF members and their friends. SUMMARY:Gender Justice Training (MEMBERS ONLY)
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, October 8th\, 2024\, at the Washington Women’s Foundation for a Gender Justice training with the Epiphanies of Equity team! By deepening our understanding of contemporary gender dynamics\, we aim to enhance the quality of our grant decisions\, nonprofit partnerships and relationships\, and help cultivate a more welcoming world. From book bans to the #metoo movement\, to the fall of Roe v. Wade\, to legislation in many states targeting queer and trans folks – gender injustice is all around us\, demanding our attention\, understanding\, and action. This training will cover core concepts\, key terms and empower folks to think broadly and critically about the world of gender. These activities may explore topics such as gender identity versus expression and the role of intersectionality. \nEOE uses a framework known as the psychosocial basis of equity work\, which delves into the interplay between our internal processes and external interactions. This framework examines how our subconscious thoughts and behaviors\, often operating on autopilot\, influence our engagement with others and ultimately shape the outcomes of equity efforts. EOE’s approach is rooted in organizational development\, social equity\, and change management\, recognizing humans as the dynamic “chaos variable” in equity work. Rather than sidelining individual subjectivity\, EOE emphasizes its central role in shaping perceptions and behaviors\, including understanding gender dynamics and evolving terminology around gender. \nClick here to register for the Gender Justice training!\nThis is an in-person training on Tuesday\, October 8th at the Washington Women’s Foundation. We will have virtual access and we encourage you to participate in person if able. There will be a pre-event survey to understand the landscape of gender justice and how we interact with gender throughout the world. \nPlease direct questions to programs@wawomensfdn.org.

SUMMARY:2023 MEC Film Discussion: The Janes + Aftershock (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:Join Washington Women’s Foundation’s Member Engagement Committee (MEC) on Monday May 15th to discuss two films exploring Reproductive Justice & Maternal Health. The Janes tells the story of a pre-roe world\, in 1972\, where a group of committed friends and neighbors provided abortions to all who were in need. Aftershock tells the story of two families recently processing the devastating effects of the maternal mortality epidemic\, highlighting how black mothers are four times more likely to die during childbirth. \nThe Member Events Committee (MEC)  invites attendees to screen one or both films at home and then join us for this in-person conversation. The Janes is available on HBO and Aftershock is available on Hulu. Join us for wine and popcorn to discuss these vital films\, with special guest Judith Arcana\, one of the Janes featured in the film. This conversation will be moderated by Chris Charbonneau\, WaWF Board Member and former CEO of Planned Parenthood. \nBorn and raised in the Great Lakes region\, living now in the Pacific Northwest\, Judith Arcana is a writer of stories\, poems\, essays and books – and a Jane\, a member of the underground service that first found and then provided safe illegal abortions in Chicago before the Roe decision in January of 1973. Judith worked in the service for two years\, and soon afterward taught classes about health and sexuality for the Chicago Women’s Liberation School\, Columbia College\, and local high schools. In the mid-1970s she was part of a small group that traveled downstate to offer Health&Bodies classes at the Illinois State Reformatory for Women. She continues doing reproductive justice work in her writing/publication + public speaking/performance. What if your mother\, published in 2005\, offers poems and monologues focused on abortion and other motherhood themes.  Hello. This is Jane. – her story collection about abortion and tattooing – came out in 2020.  Keesha and Joanie and JANE  is a prose fiction zine about post-Roe cross-generational organizing.  Visit her website’s JANE page for useful/relevant links:  juditharcana \nChris Charbonneau became a member of the WaWF in 2005. She was the longest serving CEO of a Planned Parenthood Affiliate\, at 29 years. The Affiliate that she led works in 6 States. During her tenure\, she worked to change laws and health policy. She co-founded Planned Parenthood Online\, which serves 16 million users a month. For 12 years Chris chaired Afaxys\, a pharmaceutical company created to make supplies of contraceptives available to low-income women. It is now the largest supplier of these products to the social sector in the United States. Chris also serves on the Board of Planned Protection Insurance Company\, providing insurance to Planned Parenthood Affiliates. A graduate of the University of Washington\, Chris joined the WaWF transformation to collaborate with visionary women to improve our communities and change lives. \nRegister for the 2023 Film Discussion! \nThis event is open to the entire community.
