SUMMARY:Beyond the Numbers: Investing in Women\, Girls and Gender Equity (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:Data from around the world confirms that investing in women and girls is one of the best strategies to accelerate progress on our greatest issues from climate change\, to poverty\, to access to health and education. Unfortunately\, giving trends show that the majority of giving (nearly 90%) continues to go to the top 5% of large nonprofits\, and that less than 2% is invested in organizations that specifically focus ion women and girls. But this trend could finally change as trillions are expected to pass into women’s hands over the next decade in what financial analysts are calling\, “The Great Wealth Transfer.” \nJoin us on October 31st at 12:00PM to learn about the landscape for funding women and girls\, including the data on giving trends and disparities in funding\, and what this means for the issues we care most about. With an emphasis on the WaWF’s 2023 grant priority areas\, speakers will talk about what is needed\, what is at stake\, organizations and collectives working on this nationally and globally\, and to share inspiring stories and examples of where donors can give to make the greatest impact. \nSpeakers: \n\nRadha Friedman\, author of Fundraising Without Burnout: Radically Reimagining Philanthropy to Transform Your Impact (Moderator)\nRozella Kennedy\, Director of Impact and Equity\, Camber Collective\nAngelika Arutyunova\, Co-Founder of CEECCNA Collaborative Fund\n\nThis event will kick-off the work of the 2023 Women & Girls Grant Committee. We hope everyone will join us on December 7th for the PopUp for Women & Girls to put their commitment to funding women & girls into action!  \nThis virtual learning event is open to all and will be recorded. Email programs@wawomensfdn.org with any questions!  \nRegister here for Beyond the Numbers: Investing in Women & Girls!

Walking Tour booklet and coffee included in the ticket price. \nWorking with Tribal Communities 102 is a training that takes a deeper dive in the areas of relationship maintenance through Kateri’s career journey. We explore how partnering with tribes as an outside entity requires a respectful and culturally sensitive approach. Kateri has participated in the annual Canoe Journey for over 16 years\, dances both traditional Co-Salish and fancy shawl dancing. SUMMARY:Philanthropy Series: Donor Perspectives on Reparations (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce Washington Women’s Foundation’s Philanthropy Learning Series. Beginning in March 2023 WaWF will host panel discussions with philanthropic leaders on various topics including how to build your giving plan\, solidarity as an action\, a critical lens on donor advised funds\, impact investing\, and donor perspectives on reparations in philanthropy. \nJoin us virtually on Thursday\, August 24th at 12PM for the fifth and final session in WaWF’s Philanthropy Learning Series on Donor Perspectives on Reparations. Moderated by Cailtlin Lombardi of Columbia Legal Services\, philanthropic leaders Hilary Giovale\, Holly Marklyn and Beth McCaw will discuss their individual and collective actions on reparations through their current giving and future plans. Don’t miss this real and action-oriented discussion about reparative philanthropy and how we can collectively move forward together. \nBeth McCaw is a co-founder of Bernier McCaw Foundation and is the founding funder of Threshold Philanthropy\, LLC\, through which she and a team of Black and Indigenous women have been returning resources to Black and Indigenous individuals and communities in Washington state and North and South Carolina for the past two years. Beth is originally from Eastern North Carolina and traces her roots there to pre-Revolutionary War times. She has lived in Washington since 1998 and it’s here\, that she’s had transformative experiences as the former President & CEO of Washington Women’s Foundation and as a member of the Board of Directors of YWCA of Seattle/King County/Snohomish County\, the Board of Directors of YWCA USA\, and the Sisterhood\, a community of seven white women and six Black women who are living into what it means to deeply reckon with white supremacy and the racial wealth gap. \nHilary Giovale is a mother\, writer\, and community organizer who holds a Master’s Degree in Good and Sustainable Communities. She has taught improvisational dance and has served on the boards of philanthropic\, human rights\, and environmental organizations. A ninth-generation American settler\, she is descended from Celtic\, Germanic\, Nordic\, and Indigenous peoples of Ancient Europe. For most of her life these origins were obscured by whiteness. After learning more about her ancestors’ history\, Hilary began emerging from a fog of amnesia\, denial\, and fragmentation. For the first time\, she could see a painful reality: her family’s occupation of this land has harmed Indigenous and African peoples\, cultures\, and lifeways. She is an active speaker\, teacher\, and reparative philanthropist. Divesting from whiteness\, she bridges divides with truth\, healing\, apology and forgiveness. Hilary is the author of a forthcoming memoir\, currently available for pre-order. \n\n\n\n\n\nAs early Microsoft employees Holly and Bill Marklyn accumulated first generation wealth which they are now looking to redistribute back into society in an equitable manner.  They see wealth inequality\, particularly racial wealth inequality\, as a significant problem in our society\, with intergenerational wealth transfer as a significant cause of the problem.  As such\, they do not intend to pass their wealth on to their children and are committed to redistributing their wealth in a racially equitable manner. They did not want to rely on traditional top-down donor control and decision-making\, and so chose to establish a participatory grantmaking fund in which they cede grantmaking power to a BIPOC funding committee. \nCaitlin Lombardi was raised in the Pacific Northwest with two sisters on the land of the Suquamish and Duwamish People. She is currently the Director of Development and Communications for Columbia Legal Services\, a legal aid organization focused on systemic change alongside people who are incarcerated or undocumented. She have spent 15 years in development\, DEI\, and community engagement at organizations including The ACLU of Washington\, The Riveter and The Post-Prison Education Program. These roles\, along with growing up in an interracial family\, many years working in restaurants\, and numerous mentors – mostly women of color – have helped shape my commitment to race equity and community leadership in justice work. In addition to work\, she leads presentations for the Civil Reparations Project\, clean stalls at a barn near her house\, and has three daughters who keep her pretty tired\, incredibly amused\, and humble. \n\nRegister here for Donor Perspectives on Reparations!\n\n\n\n\nThese events are free and open to the entire WaWF community\, meaning they are open to all! We will record the discussions and share with those who register for viewing. For questions\, please contact  programs@wawomensfdn.org. \n

SUMMARY:Philanthropy Series: A Critical Lens on Donor Advised Funds (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce Washington Women’s Foundation’s Philanthropy Learning Series. Beginning in March 2023 WaWF will host panel discussions with philanthropic leaders on various topics including how to build your giving plan\, solidarity as an action\, a critical lens on donor advised funds\, values aligned investing\, and donor perspectives on reparations in philanthropy.   \nJoin us on Thursday\, June 29th at 12PM for the fourth Philanthropy Series session where we will learn from experts who navigate the world of Donor Advised Funds. During this panel\, you will learn to move beyond how to use a DAF and towards how to use one thoughtfully\, considering the critiques and advantages of utilizing a Donor Advised Fund. We hope you join us for this deep dive into this hot button philanthropic tool\, with perspectives from Jen Risher of HalfMyDAF and Lem White of Possibility Labs\, moderated by Stephanie Ellis-Smith of Phila Giving.   \nJennifer Risher is an author\, speaker\, philanthropist\, and investor on a mission to move money out of the taboo category and help us have much-needed conversations. Her book\, “We Need to Talk: A Memoir About Wealth” explores the impact of wealth on identity and relationships.  Jennifer was born in Seattle\, Washington\, grew up in Oregon\, and graduated from Connecticut College. She joined Microsoft in 1991 where she worked as a recruiter and then as a product manager. As an extra-fortunate beneficiary of the dot-com boom\, she believes abundance can drive change and fuel action — and that we need to be putting more philanthropic dollars to work now. SUMMARY:Racial Equity in Funding Advocacy (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:Building on last June’s session with Bolder Advocacy\, Investing in Change\, join the Washington Women’s Foundation and Bolder Advocacy as we explore Racial Equity in Funding Advocacy on June 21st 2023 at 3PM. \nThis session is all about rolling up our sleeves and applying our experience around advocacy. After a short recap of the advocacy rules covered in our earlier sessions\, we will dive in and explore a series of hypothetical scenarios that funders may encounter when it comes to supporting and engaging in advocacy. We will close out our session by sharing out some best practices and considerations for how funders can build power through advocacy to support racially equitable outcomes. \nAdvocacy definition: Our understanding of advocacy is work that seeks to advance an idea\, argue a position\, and/or enrich the debate about an issue of public concern. This could include education\, research\, litigation\, campaigning\, or nonpartisan political work. \nFor this event\, please register via Bolder Advocacy at this link. \nThis virtual session is required for members of the Advocacy Grant committee\, open to the community and the recording will be shared with those who register. Please email programs@wawomensfdn.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:Philanthropy Series: Values Aligned Investing (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce Washington Women’s Foundation Philanthropy Learning Series. Beginning in March 2023 WaWF will host panel discussions with philanthropic leaders on various topics including how to build your giving plan\, solidarity as an action\, a critical lens on donor advised funds\, values aligned investing\, and donor perspectives on reparations in philanthropy. \nJoin us virtually on Wednesday\, May 24th at 12PM for the third Philanthropy Series session to expand your knowledge of values aligned investments.  From impact investing to ESG\, there are many ways we talk about aligning our investments with our values. During this session\, moderated by WaWF Member Jennifer Sik\, attendees will learn from Nancy Reid of Tyche Consulting and Sandhya Nakhasi of Common Future about how to better align your investments with your values\, applying an equity lens to investments and some individual steps you can take with your own investments. \nNancy Reid designs strategies for families to align their investments with what matters most to them. Her advisory career began on Wall Street and has since expanded to include a specialization in investing for social and environmental impact\, with leadership roles at EnVest\, Canopy\, and Seattle Impact Investing Group (SIIG).  She is of counsel at Phīla Engaged Giving\, where she develops strategies for individuals and families to amplify their philanthropic values through their invested wealth.  From 2013-2020\, she launched and chaired the Seattle chapter of TIGER 21\, a peer learning network focused on investing\, legacy\, and family dynamics.  Her consulting practice focuses on investment policy development and trust strategy.  She is a Fellow at the University of Zurich’s Center for Sustainable Finance and Private Wealth in Zurich\, Switzerland. Nancy has served on the boards of Realize Impact\, the MCO Foundation\, the Blade Foundation\, and Global Potential; and she served as a presidential appointee on Dartmouth College’s Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility.  She holds a BA from Yale University\, an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth\, and a CTFA (Certified Trust and Fiduciary Advisor) designation from the American Bankers Association. \nSandhya is passionate about co-creating capital solutions that break from the constraints of our current financial system as a way to shift control to and resources into communities that have been systematically excluded from meaningful investment. As Managing Director of Community Credit Lab and CF Investments\, Sandhya uses an experimental approach to stewarding and growing a portfolio of field defining\, equitable lending and community-led investment programs that demonstrate solutions that shift the flow of capital towards BIPOC communities to build a more equitable financial system. Before Common Future’s acquisition of Community Credit Lab (CCL)\, Sandhya was Co-Founder and served first as CCL’s Chief Investment Officer and subsequently as Executive Director. Sandhya has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from New York University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. She is based in Seattle where she’s learned to love getting outdoors and to enjoy a good rainy day. \nJennifer Sik joined Washington Women’s Foundation in 2010. Aftershock tells the story of two families recently processing the devastating effects of the maternal mortality epidemic\, highlighting how black mothers are four times more likely to die during childbirth. \nThe Member Events Committee (MEC)  invites attendees to screen one or both films at home and then join us for this in-person conversation. In the mid-1970s she was part of a small group that traveled downstate to offer Health&Bodies classes at the Illinois State Reformatory for Women. She continues doing reproductive justice work in her writing/publication + public speaking/performance. What if your mother\, published in 2005\, offers poems and monologues focused on abortion and other motherhood themes.  Hello. This is Jane. – her story collection about abortion and tattooing – came out in 2020.  Keesha and Joanie and JANE  is a prose fiction zine about post-Roe cross-generational organizing.  Visit her website’s JANE page for useful/relevant links:  juditharcana \nChris Charbonneau became a member of the WaWF in 2005. She was the longest serving CEO of a Planned Parenthood Affiliate\, at 29 years. The Affiliate that she led works in 6 States. During her tenure\, she worked to change laws and health policy. For 12 years Chris chaired Afaxys\, a pharmaceutical company created to make supplies of contraceptives available to low-income women. It is now the largest supplier of these products to the social sector in the United States. Beginning in March 2023 WaWF will host panel discussions with philanthropic leaders on various topics including how to build your giving plan\, solidarity as an action\, a critical lens on donor advised funds\, impact investing\, and donor perspectives on reparations in philanthropy. \nJoin us on March 29th at 10AM for the first session to explore How to Build Your Giving Plan. In the ever-changing charitable landscape\, it can feel challenging to make strategic decisions that honor the work of community nonprofits and simultaneously build your long-term philanthropic impact.  Moderated by Maria Kolby-Wolfe\, President & CEO of WaWF\, Debra Shapira from Brighton Jones and LeAnne Moss from Renton Regional Community Foundation will share decades of experience helping clients and community members leverage their funds to build greater civic equity and plan for the future. \nRecognized by the Puget Sound Business Journal as a Woman of Influence\, LeAnne is a leader in the philanthropic and non-profit community. She has more than 25 years of experience in executive leadership working at the nexus of philanthropy and social change. As executive director of the Renton Regional Community Foundation for the last five years\, LeAnne has spearheaded a strategic framework process\, initiated efforts to integrate equity into their work\, and launched a pandemic response fund that to date has awarded $800\,000 to 90 organizations in South King County. LeAnne’s other experience includes being at the helm of the Women’s Funding Alliance for 15 years\, co-facilitating interracial workshops and retreats\, and facilitating white affinity groups for members of the owning class. LeAnne is motivated by a commitment to racial redistribution and repair for the sake of restoring all our humanity. \nDebra is the Lead Philanthropic Advisor at Brighton Jones\, where she advises and educates clients on how to align their passions and resources with strategic\, trust-based philanthropy. She leverages her expertise in the social impact sphere – including two decades working for and with nonprofit organizations and social enterprises – to help clients articulate their philanthropic vision and engage in impactful relationships with the causes and organizations that inspire them. Debra and her husband are raising two smart\, funny\, and active young kids\, and are often found making art\, music\, and food together in their home just outside of Boston. True to her Pacific Northwest roots she has a great love of the outdoors\, single origin coffee\, and that new edgy restaurant on the corner. Debra serves on the Board of Directors of Bean Voyage\, a feminist social enterprise working to eradicate the gender gap in coffee-farming communities in Central America. \nRegister here for How to Build Your Giving Plan!\nThese events are free and open to the entire WaWF community\, meaning they are open to all! We will record the discussions and share with those who register for viewing. SUMMARY:Member Town Hall: Growing Our Membership (MEMBERS ONLY)
DESCRIPTION:Presenting our new(ish) Membership structure!  \nMembership is at the heart of Washington Women’s Foundation. As members\, you make up our collective. You fund our grants\, our programs and our operations. You\, our members\, are our everything!  \nAll of us work to retain our current members\, even while we look for ways to expand our membership base. In support of that effort\, for the past year your Membership Task Force (MTF) has been working on these questions: What could we do to make our membership more inclusive? How can we be sure to keep our current members happy? How can we bring in new members?  \nTo answer these questions\, the MTF researched ideas from other women’s collective giving groups around the country\, conducted membership surveys to hear from you\, and eventually developed a membership recruitment and retention strategy you can truly be proud of!  \nLast month the MTF presented their recommendations to your Board of Directors\, who enthusiastically approved the plan. Then they presented it to your Cabinet\, and those committee leaders all loved the new(ish) structure\, too.  \nWhich means it’s finally ready to show off to you – and we can’t wait to hear what you think!  \nWe do want you to know right away that your classic membership contribution of $2\,500 has not changed! With that important first question out of the way\, join us on February 21st and get all the rest of your questions answered!  \nPanelists:  \nKris Kaminishi\, Washington Women’s Foundation Board President  \nDiane Altman Dautoff\, Membership Task Force Member  \nPage Pless\, Membership and Resource Development Committee Member  \nThis Member Town Hall will take place virtually on Zoom\, Tuesday February 21st\, at 12PM.   \nRegister here for Member Town Hall!\nThis is a WaWF member-only event and will be recorded for members who are unable to attend.  Email programs@wawomensfdn.org with any questions!

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Gabrielle Blair\, author of Ejaculate Responsibly (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Washington Women’s Foundation’s (WaWF) Member Events Committee (MEC) selects a book for all members to read and discuss. In 2023\, MEC invites you to read Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion by Gabrielle Blair. Join us on February 15th 2023 at 12PM for a virtual discussion with the author. \nIf you or your friends have had experiences with birth control in your lives\, you may find this quick-read book provocative\, and you just may want to join WaWF in a discussion with the author\, Gabrielle Blair.  Please join the discussion even if you haven’t yet read the book. \nWorkman Publishing describes the book: “In Ejaculate Responsibly\, Gabrielle Blair offers a provocative reframing of the abortion issue in post-Roe America. In a series of 28 brief arguments\, Blair deftly makes the case for moving the abortion debate away from controlling and legislating women’s bodies and instead directs the focus on men’s lack of accountability in preventing unwanted pregnancies.” \nEjaculate Responsibly is available for purchase at Third Place Books. We encourage you to consider purchasing it from Third Place Books\, Bookshop.org or from your neighborhood bookstore. You can also check for the book at your local library. \nGabrielle Blair the founder of DesignMom.com. Started in 2006\, it has been named a Website of the Year by Timemagazine; praised as a top parenting blog by The Wall Street Journal\, Parents\, and Better Homes & Gardens; and it won the Iris Award for Blog of the Year. Gabrielle’s first book\, Design Mom: How to Live with Kids\, a New York Timesbestseller\, was published in 2015 by Artisan. She is also a founder of Alt Summit\, the blockbuster annual conference for online content creators and creative entrepreneurs\, currently in its thirteenth year. As a thought leader for more than fifteen years\, Gabrielle has written and moderated hundreds of discussions on difficult topics and interviewed some of the most influential people in the world. Her writing is quoted and shared across the globe daily. Gabrielle and her husband\, Ben Blair\, have six children—Ralph\, Maude\, Olive\, Oscar\, Betty\, and Flora June. After six years in Oakland\, California\, they moved to a small town in Normandy\, France\, where they are renovating a house from the 1600s. \nRegister here for A Conversation with Gabrielle Blair\, author of Ejaculate Responsibly!\nThis event is open to all and we invite WaWF members to share this event with their wider community.
