These will be our final $100\,000 Rest & Repair Awardees and we are thrilled to introduce you to them. The entire WaWF community is invited to celebrate these extraordinary leaders. We will hear from awardees\, lift up their work\, and toast their leadership with drinks and delicious food.  \nThe WaWF Rest and Repair Awards are made in recognition and support of Black women leaders working in Washington State’s nonprofit sector. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fast-paced\, fun-filled evening of collective giving where together we’ll learn about\, pitch and select our 2023 Women & Girls Grantees!  PopUP! is an interactive celebration of women\, of girls\, of organizations creating equitable opportunities for women and girls across Washington State\, and of the power of collective philanthropy. \nAt WaWF\, one of our cherished values is to elevate and amplify the power of all who identify as women. Supported by the WFA Fund for Women\, we offer the Women & Girls Grant to organizations focused on women and girls within the year’s chosen priorities: Early Childhood Education\, Reproductive Justice & Maternal Health\, and Food Security & Sovereignty. The PopUP! is the culmination of the work of the Women & Girls Grant Committee.   \nOur working definition of gender identity is a person’s internal\, deeply held sense of their gender. As such\, we define women and girls as individuals whose gender identity is as a woman or girl. For the Women & Girls grant program\, we intend to fund with an intersectional lens and aim to support organizations that foster more equitable opportunities for women and girls.    \nThis event is in person at the National Nordic Museum at 2655 NW Market St in Seattle\, WA from 5:00 to 7:30 PM on Thursday\, December 7th. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are $50 each. Festive drinks and heavy appetizers are included with ticket purchase.   \nThis year we are thrilled to offer gallery access to the National Nordic Museum. SUMMARY:Beyond the Numbers: Investing in Women\, Girls and Gender Equity (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:Data from around the world confirms that investing in women and girls is one of the best strategies to accelerate progress on our greatest issues from climate change\, to poverty\, to access to health and education. Unfortunately\, giving trends show that the majority of giving (nearly 90%) continues to go to the top 5% of large nonprofits\, and that less than 2% is invested in organizations that specifically focus ion women and girls. But this trend could finally change as trillions are expected to pass into women’s hands over the next decade in what financial analysts are calling\, “The Great Wealth Transfer.” \nJoin us on October 31st at 12:00PM to learn about the landscape for funding women and girls\, including the data on giving trends and disparities in funding\, and what this means for the issues we care most about. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive in-person event at the Burke Museum on October 11th focused on deepening our understanding of Indigenous communities. We’ll start with Kateri Joe’s Working in Tribal Communities 102 learning session\, designed as a follow up to her 101 session we hosted in the summer. After Kateri’s workshop\, join Owen Oliver on the Indigenous Walking Tour of the University of Washington\, highlighting indigenous places across campus. Walking Tour booklet and coffee included in the ticket price. \nWorking with Tribal Communities 102 is a training that takes a deeper dive in the areas of relationship maintenance through Kateri’s career journey. We explore how partnering with tribes as an outside entity requires a respectful and culturally sensitive approach. This training provides guidelines and best practices for engaging and collaborating with tribal communities/ partners. How to continually invest in building and nurturing the relationship beyond initial projects or engagements and better understanding of the life cycle of relationship building. \nKateri Joe is a member of the Swinomish tribe and Halalt First Nation. She was born and raised in West Seattle\, and attended West Seattle High School. This began her journey building her network in the Urban Native American community of Seattle. Her experience as in the West Seattle Native American club that lead the movement to change the school’s “Indian\,” mascot and feed her passion for social justice. Kateri has participated in the annual Canoe Journey for over 16 years\, dances both traditional Co-Salish and fancy shawl dancing. She attended Fort Lewis College\, in Durango\, CO obtaining a BA in Sociology and minor in Native American Indigenous Studies. Kateri moved back to Seattle to achieve her Masters of Social Work from the University of Washington\, Tacoma. Kateri began working at Treehouse as an Education Specialist in the Muckleshoot\, Enumclaw and Auburn school districts. She has recently transitioned into the Director of Special Populations position focusing on increasing culturally appropriate services for youth in foster care. \nOwen L. Oliver (Quinault / Isleta Pueblo) comes from the people of the Lower Columbia River\, Salish Sea\, and Southwest Pueblos. He grew up in Ketchikan\, Alaska and Seattle where in 2021 he graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in American Indian Studies and Political Science. Through these disciplines he’s been able to create and manage projects that range from community work\, art\, education\, and influence on local and federal policy. His work is concentrated in Indigenous education and cultural representation\, a path that he’s learned from his connection to Tribal Canoe Journeys. He currently is the Director of Arts and Culture for Headwater People Consulting\, an Indigenous-led consulting firm. \nThis event is $20 which will cover materials and light snacks. Our themes for Convening 2023 are Arts and Community Culture; Housing and Hunger; and Law\, Justice\, and Incarceration.   \n​Convening 2023 is a crucial first step in determining our 2024 grantmaking and learning priorities. Convening will feature a variety of speakers\, with deep knowledge of our three themes\, who are reflective of and embedded in the communities they serve. Together\, we will learn from these experts\, changemakers\, and community organizers driving equitable\, transformative solutions to Washington’s most pressing challenges.  \nThe morning panel will discuss Law\, Justice\, and Incarceration\, wonderfully moderated by Camerina Zorrozua of The Way to Justice with insights from Abigail Scholar of Central Washington Justice for our Neighbors\, Judge Veronica Galvan of the King County Superior Court\, Virla Spencer of The Way to Justice and David Heppard of the Freedom Project.   \n After lunch\, we will hear from unique perspectives on Arts and Community Culture. DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce Washington Women’s Foundation’s Philanthropy Learning Series. Beginning in March 2023 WaWF will host panel discussions with philanthropic leaders on various topics including how to build your giving plan\, solidarity as an action\, a critical lens on donor advised funds\, impact investing\, and donor perspectives on reparations in philanthropy. \nJoin us virtually on Thursday\, August 24th at 12PM for the fifth and final session in WaWF’s Philanthropy Learning Series on Donor Perspectives on Reparations. Moderated by Cailtlin Lombardi of Columbia Legal Services\, philanthropic leaders Hilary Giovale\, Holly Marklyn and Beth McCaw will discuss their individual and collective actions on reparations through their current giving and future plans. Don’t miss this real and action-oriented discussion about reparative philanthropy and how we can collectively move forward together. \nBeth McCaw is a co-founder of Bernier McCaw Foundation and is the founding funder of Threshold Philanthropy\, LLC\, through which she and a team of Black and Indigenous women have been returning resources to Black and Indigenous individuals and communities in Washington state and North and South Carolina for the past two years. Beth is originally from Eastern North Carolina and traces her roots there to pre-Revolutionary War times. She has lived in Washington since 1998 and it’s here\, that she’s had transformative experiences as the former President & CEO of Washington Women’s Foundation and as a member of the Board of Directors of YWCA of Seattle/King County/Snohomish County\, the Board of Directors of YWCA USA\, and the Sisterhood\, a community of seven white women and six Black women who are living into what it means to deeply reckon with white supremacy and the racial wealth gap. \nHilary Giovale is a mother\, writer\, and community organizer who holds a Master’s Degree in Good and Sustainable Communities. She has taught improvisational dance and has served on the boards of philanthropic\, human rights\, and environmental organizations. A ninth-generation American settler\, she is descended from Celtic\, Germanic\, Nordic\, and Indigenous peoples of Ancient Europe. For most of her life these origins were obscured by whiteness. After learning more about her ancestors’ history\, Hilary began emerging from a fog of amnesia\, denial\, and fragmentation. For the first time\, she could see a painful reality: her family’s occupation of this land has harmed Indigenous and African peoples\, cultures\, and lifeways. She is an active speaker\, teacher\, and reparative philanthropist. Divesting from whiteness\, she bridges divides with truth\, healing\, apology and forgiveness. Hilary is the author of a forthcoming memoir\, currently available for pre-order. \n\n\n\n\n\nAs early Microsoft employees Holly and Bill Marklyn accumulated first generation wealth which they are now looking to redistribute back into society in an equitable manner.  They see wealth inequality\, particularly racial wealth inequality\, as a significant problem in our society\, with intergenerational wealth transfer as a significant cause of the problem.  As such\, they do not intend to pass their wealth on to their children and are committed to redistributing their wealth in a racially equitable manner. They did not want to rely on traditional top-down donor control and decision-making\, and so chose to establish a participatory grantmaking fund in which they cede grantmaking power to a BIPOC funding committee. \nCaitlin Lombardi was raised in the Pacific Northwest with two sisters on the land of the Suquamish and Duwamish People. She is currently the Director of Development and Communications for Columbia Legal Services\, a legal aid organization focused on systemic change alongside people who are incarcerated or undocumented. She have spent 15 years in development\, DEI\, and community engagement at organizations including The ACLU of Washington\, The Riveter and The Post-Prison Education Program. These roles\, along with growing up in an interracial family\, many years working in restaurants\, and numerous mentors – mostly women of color – have helped shape my commitment to race equity and community leadership in justice work. Beginning in March 2023 WaWF will host panel discussions with philanthropic leaders on various topics including how to build your giving plan\, solidarity as an action\, a critical lens on donor advised funds\, values aligned investing\, and donor perspectives on reparations in philanthropy.   \nJoin us on Thursday\, June 29th at 12PM for the fourth Philanthropy Series session where we will learn from experts who navigate the world of Donor Advised Funds. During this panel\, you will learn to move beyond how to use a DAF and towards how to use one thoughtfully\, considering the critiques and advantages of utilizing a Donor Advised Fund. We hope you join us for this deep dive into this hot button philanthropic tool\, with perspectives from Jen Risher of HalfMyDAF and Lem White of Possibility Labs\, moderated by Stephanie Ellis-Smith of Phila Giving.   \nJennifer Risher is an author\, speaker\, philanthropist\, and investor on a mission to move money out of the taboo category and help us have much-needed conversations. Her book\, “We Need to Talk: A Memoir About Wealth” explores the impact of wealth on identity and relationships.  Jennifer was born in Seattle\, Washington\, grew up in Oregon\, and graduated from Connecticut College. She joined Microsoft in 1991 where she worked as a recruiter and then as a product manager. As an extra-fortunate beneficiary of the dot-com boom\, she believes abundance can drive change and fuel action — and that we need to be putting more philanthropic dollars to work now. In 2020\, Jennifer and her husband\, David\, launched #HalfMyDAF to inspire more charitable giving. Over the last three years\, they’ve contributed millions in matching funds\, rallied donors and nonprofits\, and created a community that has moved over $33 million to nonprofits. Jennifer and David live in San Francisco and Jennifer loves playing and watching tennis\, spending time with her two twenty-something daughters\, and is a member of Women Donors Network and Solidaire.  \nLem White has spent the past 12 years as a growth executive in startups\, philanthropy\, and non-profits supporting executive teams to develop high-growth strategies. He has worked across social justice philanthropy and witnessed the power that storytelling has to activate people towards progressive social change. Additionally\, he has worked alongside Black and Brown organizational leaders in gaining traction and funding by getting to the heart of an organization’s mission in its strategies and storytelling. Lem co-leads Possibility Labs’ strategy and team. His focus is on understanding the needs of our partners and translating those into effective\, impactful programs and platforms. Previously\, Lem was Executive Director of Strategy at Movement Strategy Center\, Chief Growth Officer at Refound\, and Marketing and Communications Director at North Star Fund. Lem received his Bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University. He studied Philosophy in the Master’s program at the New School and still enjoys diving into books on philosophy and his other love\, theology.  \nStephanie Ellis-Smith is the CEO and Principal of Phila Giving\, a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP) and has nearly 30 years’ experience in advising high-impact individuals and companies. She believes strongly in being a compassionate and generous member of society and has dedicated over 20 years of her professional and personal life to the social sector. In 2020\, she co-founded Giving Gap (formerly “Give Blck”)\, an online database of Black-founded and led organizations. Stephanie has a BA from UCLA and has served on numerous boards and commissions including the Washington State Arts Commission\, appointed by Governor Gary Locke; the Seattle Arts Commission\, appointed by Mayor Greg Nickels; and the Central Waterfront Committee\, appointed by Mayor Ed Murray. She currently serves on the Seattle Art Museum’s Museum Development Authority Board (appointed by Mayor Jenny Durkan) and is on the board of the National Center for Family Philanthropy. She was appointed a Dean of Philanthropy in 2022 by The Purposeful Planning Institute. SUMMARY:Philanthropy Series: Values Aligned Investing (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce Washington Women’s Foundation Philanthropy Learning Series. Beginning in March 2023 WaWF will host panel discussions with philanthropic leaders on various topics including how to build your giving plan\, solidarity as an action\, a critical lens on donor advised funds\, values aligned investing\, and donor perspectives on reparations in philanthropy. \nJoin us virtually on Wednesday\, May 24th at 12PM for the third Philanthropy Series session to expand your knowledge of values aligned investments.  From impact investing to ESG\, there are many ways we talk about aligning our investments with our values. During this session\, moderated by WaWF Member Jennifer Sik\, attendees will learn from Nancy Reid of Tyche Consulting and Sandhya Nakhasi of Common Future about how to better align your investments with your values\, applying an equity lens to investments and some individual steps you can take with your own investments. \nNancy Reid designs strategies for families to align their investments with what matters most to them. Her advisory career began on Wall Street and has since expanded to include a specialization in investing for social and environmental impact\, with leadership roles at EnVest\, Canopy\, and Seattle Impact Investing Group (SIIG).  She is of counsel at Phīla Engaged Giving\, where she develops strategies for individuals and families to amplify their philanthropic values through their invested wealth.  From 2013-2020\, she launched and chaired the Seattle chapter of TIGER 21\, a peer learning network focused on investing\, legacy\, and family dynamics.  Her consulting practice focuses on investment policy development and trust strategy.  She is a Fellow at the University of Zurich’s Center for Sustainable Finance and Private Wealth in Zurich\, Switzerland. Nancy has served on the boards of Realize Impact\, the MCO Foundation\, the Blade Foundation\, and Global Potential; and she served as a presidential appointee on Dartmouth College’s Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility.  She holds a BA from Yale University\, an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth\, and a CTFA (Certified Trust and Fiduciary Advisor) designation from the American Bankers Association. \nSandhya is passionate about co-creating capital solutions that break from the constraints of our current financial system as a way to shift control to and resources into communities that have been systematically excluded from meaningful investment. As Managing Director of Community Credit Lab and CF Investments\, Sandhya uses an experimental approach to stewarding and growing a portfolio of field defining\, equitable lending and community-led investment programs that demonstrate solutions that shift the flow of capital towards BIPOC communities to build a more equitable financial system. Before Common Future’s acquisition of Community Credit Lab (CCL)\, Sandhya was Co-Founder and served first as CCL’s Chief Investment Officer and subsequently as Executive Director. Sandhya has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from New York University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. She is based in Seattle where she’s learned to love getting outdoors and to enjoy a good rainy day. \nJennifer Sik joined Washington Women’s Foundation in 2010. She currently serves on the Governance Committee and Membership Task Force.  She also has served on the Pooled Fund Grant Committee\, several Partner Grant Committees\, the Impact Assessment Committee\, and the Intersect Planning Committee\, before joining the board.  Jennifer is a Wealth Management Advisor at Merrill Lynch Bellevue\, working with clients to transform wealth to life goals and making an impact to the community. Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and English Linguistics from the University of Hong Kong and a Master’s of Applied Finance from Macquarie University\, Australia. SUMMARY:2023 MEC Film Discussion: The Janes + Aftershock (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:Join Washington Women’s Foundation’s Member Engagement Committee (MEC) on Monday May 15th to discuss two films exploring Reproductive Justice & Maternal Health. The Janes tells the story of a pre-roe world\, in 1972\, where a group of committed friends and neighbors provided abortions to all who were in need. Aftershock tells the story of two families recently processing the devastating effects of the maternal mortality epidemic\, highlighting how black mothers are four times more likely to die during childbirth. \nThe Member Events Committee (MEC)  invites attendees to screen one or both films at home and then join us for this in-person conversation. The Janes is available on HBO and Aftershock is available on Hulu. Join us for wine and popcorn to discuss these vital films\, with special guest Judith Arcana\, one of the Janes featured in the film. This conversation will be moderated by Chris Charbonneau\, WaWF Board Member and former CEO of Planned Parenthood. \nBorn and raised in the Great Lakes region\, living now in the Pacific Northwest\, Judith Arcana is a writer of stories\, poems\, essays and books – and a Jane\, a member of the underground service that first found and then provided safe illegal abortions in Chicago before the Roe decision in January of 1973. Judith worked in the service for two years\, and soon afterward taught classes about health and sexuality for the Chicago Women’s Liberation School\, Columbia College\, and local high schools. In the mid-1970s she was part of a small group that traveled downstate to offer Health&Bodies classes at the Illinois State Reformatory for Women. She continues doing reproductive justice work in her writing/publication + public speaking/performance. She was the longest serving CEO of a Planned Parenthood Affiliate\, at 29 years. The Affiliate that she led works in 6 States. During her tenure\, she worked to change laws and health policy. She co-founded Planned Parenthood Online\, which serves 16 million users a month. For 12 years Chris chaired Afaxys\, a pharmaceutical company created to make supplies of contraceptives available to low-income women. It is now the largest supplier of these products to the social sector in the United States. Chris also serves on the Board of Planned Protection Insurance Company\, providing insurance to Planned Parenthood Affiliates.
