SUMMARY:Member 2 Member: Kathy Edwards on Philanthropy (MEMBERS + FRIENDS)
DESCRIPTION:The WaWF collective is a wealth of knowledge\, experience\, perspective\, and expertise. We’re excited to continue this Member focused series: Member 2 Member\, where members are invited to nominate their fellow members to present on a subject with which they hold special proficiency or expertise. \nJoin us Thursday\, May 8th\, at 4:30PM to hear from one of WaWF’s longtime members\, Kathy Edwards\, on her life’s work of philanthropy and the decision to sunset her family foundation\, Cedarmere Foundation. Kathy will be joined in conversation by  fellow WaWF member\, Mercedes Luna. \nKathy Edwards attained a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems and spent 30 years doing organization development work with nonprofit organizations throughout the US and internationally.  She has had numerous articles on nonprofit governance and leadership published in regional and national publications. Kathy has also served on numerous nonprofit boards including the Washington Women’s Foundation\, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest\, World Neighbors (an international development organization headquartered in Oklahoma City)\, and Saint George’s School (Spokane\, WA).  After retiring in 2005\, Kathy and her husband\, George\, founded the Cedarmere Foundation.  For the past 18 years\, Kathy has served as the foundation’s President and led its efforts to strengthen the leadership and infrastructure of nonprofit organizations in the Puget Sound region through capacity building grants.  In recent years\, under Kathy’s leadership\, the foundation has narrowed its focus by being intentional about building the capacity of BIPOC-led or BIPOC-serving nonprofits in order to better meet the needs of under-resourced communities and give their members a voice.  Kathy served two years as the co-chair of the Washington Statewide Capacity Collaborative in 2021-2022. She and her board have recently completed the process of distributing the foundation’s entire endowment through grants to capacity building organizations and sunsetting the Cedarmere Foundation. \nMercedes Luna (Tlingit) is the Associate Director for Advancement at the University of Washington School of Nursing. In her work as a fundraiser\, Mercedes is passionate about changing the field of philanthropy to create a more equitable and just future for the next generation. As a fourth-generation Seattleite\, Yonsei (fourth-generation Japanese)\, Filipino American\, and enrolled member of the Tlingit tribe\, her mixed heritage fuels her\, and she is proud to volunteer and support her local communities and cultural preservation. In addition to being an active member of the Washington Women’s Foundation\, Mercedes also serves on the Executive Board of Trustees of Look\, Listen + Learn TV and on the Pulling Together Committee of Friends of Waterfront Seattle. \nClick here to register for M2M with Kathy Edwards! \nPlease email programs@wawomensfdn.org with your Member 2 Member nominations and any questions about the event. This event is in person at the Washington Women’s Foundation on Thursday\, May 8th!

SUMMARY:MET: Japanese Garden Tour (MEMBERS ONLY)
DESCRIPTION:Come join fellow WaWF members in touring the Seattle Japanese Garden. Our guide will be WaWF member and certified guide\, Alice Cunningham. \nWhen: Wednesday\, April 9\, 2025\, at11:30am. \nWhere: Seattle Japanese Garden ( https://www.seattlejapanesegarden.org) \nLunch:  to follow afterwards at Jae’s Asian Bistro and Sushi (https://www.jaesasianbistroandsushi-seattle.com). We will carpool to this nearby restaurant. \nCost: $10 for adults\, $7 for 65+adults \nRegister here for the Japanese Garden Tour!\nIf you’ve watched the TV mini-series “Shogun” you’ll know that one Lord out fought and out witted the other feudal lords to unify Japan after several centuries of brutal fighting. That Lord\, Tokugawa\, ruled that all the other feudal lords had to move to Tokyo\, but their families had to stay in their respective castles. They were not allowed to travel. Stuck at home the families looked for a way to ease their boredom. \nThe development of stroll gardens large in scale and created for enjoyment meant that these stay-at-home families could experience the idea of traveling. Our own Japanese Garden in the Washington Park Arboretum was designed as just that type of stroll garden dating from the early years of the Edo Period (1603-1868). \nJoin us for a tour of this unique beautiful garden at the height of spring.  Please email christineatkins1@gmail.com with any questions.

SUMMARY:2024 PopUP! for Women & Girls! (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fast-paced\, fun-filled evening of collective giving where together we’ll learn about\, pitch and select our 2024 Women & Girls Grantees!  PopUP! is an interactive celebration of women\, of girls\, of organizations creating equitable opportunities for women and girls across Washington State\, and of the power of collective philanthropy. \nAt WaWF\, one of our cherished values is to elevate and amplify the power of all who identify as women. Supported by the WFA Fund for Women\, we offer the Women & Girls Grant to organizations focused on women and girls within the year’s chosen priorities: Mental Health + Housing\, Expanding Access to Art in Schools and Re-entry Support. The PopUP! is the culmination of the work of the Women & Girls Grant Committee.   \nOur working definition of gender identity is a person’s internal\, deeply held sense of their gender. As such\, we define women and girls as individuals whose gender identity is as a woman or girl. For the Women & Girls grant program\, we intend to fund with an intersectional lens and aim to support organizations that foster more equitable opportunities for women and girls.    \nThis event is in person at the National Nordic Museum at 2655 NW Market St in Seattle\, WA from 5:00 to 7:30 PM on Wednesday\, December 4th 2024. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are $50 each. Festive drinks and heavy appetizers are included with ticket purchase.   \nParking is located first-come\, first-serve in the National Nordic Museum’s lot (behind the museum) for $2 an hour – consider carpooling or taking public transportation! Please direct questions to programs@wawomensfdn.org.  \nRegistration is closed for this event. Please email katherine@wawomensfdn.org to be added to the waitlist.\nThanks to our generous sponsors: \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Securing a Multiracial Democracy: In Conversation with Steve Phillips (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:Join political leader\, columnist and bestselling author Steve Phillips and local civic organizations for a discussion on race\, elections\, and how our modern day dilemmas are an extension of a fight that dates back to the Civil War. \nIn his new book\, How We Win the Civil War\, Phillips warns that the Confederates never really stopped fighting the Civil War\, that conservatives are taking full advantage of this reality\, and that those in denial imperil our democracy. \nWith his trademark blend of political analysis and historical argument\, Phillips lays out razor-sharp prescriptions\, from increasing voter participation and demolishing racist immigration policies to reviving the Great Society programs of the 1960s—all of them geared toward strengthening a new multiracial democracy and ridding our politics of white supremacy\, once and for all. \nThe event will feature an interview with Phillips\, audience Q&A\, and opportunities to get engaged with local civic organizations\, working to create a multiracial democracy that works for all of us. \nThis event is co-hosted by the Washington Women’s Foundation\, Progress Alliance of Washington\, and Social Venture Partners Seattle. \nClick here to register for Securing a Multiracial Democracy!
