DESCRIPTION:Presenting our new(ish) Membership structure!  \nMembership is at the heart of Washington Women’s Foundation. As members\, you make up our collective. You fund our grants\, our programs and our operations. You\, our members\, are our everything!  \nAll of us work to retain our current members\, even while we look for ways to expand our membership base. In support of that effort\, for the past year your Membership Task Force (MTF) has been working on these questions: What could we do to make our membership more inclusive? How can we be sure to keep our current members happy? How can we bring in new members?  \nTo answer these questions\, the MTF researched ideas from other women’s collective giving groups around the country\, conducted membership surveys to hear from you\, and eventually developed a membership recruitment and retention strategy you can truly be proud of!  \nLast month the MTF presented their recommendations to your Board of Directors\, who enthusiastically approved the plan. Then they presented it to your Cabinet\, and those committee leaders all loved the new(ish) structure\, too.  \nWhich means it’s finally ready to show off to you – and we can’t wait to hear what you think!  \nWe do want you to know right away that your classic membership contribution of $2\,500 has not changed! We will hear from awardees\, lift up their work\, and toast their leadership with drinks and delicious food.  \nThe WaWF Rest and Repair Awards are made in recognition and support of Black women leaders working in Washington State’s nonprofit sector. SUMMARY:A Conversation with Jeffery Robinson (PAID EVENT - OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:Together with the Endowment for Equal Justice\, join us the evening of January 10th to hear from renowned lawyer and civil rights activist\, Jeffery Robinson\, where he will discuss his powerful film\, Who We Are – A Chronicle of Racism in America.  Jeffery is a dynamic\, sought-after speaker on the role of race in the criminal justice system and a nationally recognized trial attorney\, having tried over 200 criminal cases to verdict. Our discussion will be moderated by Washington Women’s Foundation President & CEO\, Maria Kolby-Wolfe. A light reception will take place at 5:30 and the main presentation will begin at 6:30. \nJeffery Robinson was a deputy legal director at the America Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) national office and the Director of the ACLU’s Trone Center for Justice and Equality\, which houses the organization’s work on criminal and racial justice issues. Since graduating from Harvard Law School in 1981\, Jeffery has almost four decades of experience working on these issues. For seven years\, he represented indigent clients in state court at The Defender Association and then in federal court at the Federal Public Defender’s Office\, both in Seattle. In 1988\, Jeffery began a 27- year private practice at the Seattle firm of Schroeter\, Goldmark & Bender\, where he represented a broad range of clients in local\, state\, and federal courts on charges ranging from shoplifting to securities fraud and first degree murder. He has tried over 200 criminal cases to verdict and has tried more than a dozen civil cases representing plaintiffs suing corporate and government entities. Jeffery was one of the original members of the John Adams Project and worked on the behalf of one of five men held at Guantanamo Bay charged with carrying out the 9/11 attacks. In recent years\, he has traveled the country speaking hard truths about race in America. \nThe Who We Are – A Chronicle of Racism in America film will be made available a week before January 10th to watch online at home or can also be viewed on Netflix. Watch out for an email with a link to the film around January 4th\, 2023. \nThis event is in person at Langston Seattle at 104 S 17th Ave from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday\, January 10th\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:The PopUP! for Women and Girls will give you a taste of the collective giving experience at Washington Women’s Foundation (WaWF) in just a few hours! All are invited to learn about the issues and select our new grantees. If you’re curious about grantmaking and dedicated to supporting women & girls\, join us for a hands-on evening of connection and impact.  \nNo collective giving experience? No worries! This fast-paced and fun evening will be guided by the Women & Girls Grant Committee and WaWF staff. There will also be an opportunity to contribute to the WFA Fund for Women in order to support future grantmaking.     \nAt WaWF\, one of our cherished values is to elevate and amplify the power of all who identify as women. Supported by the WFA Fund for Women\, we offer the Women & Girls Grant to organizations focused on women and girls within the year’s chosen priorities: Community Cultural Preservation\, Mental Health & Housing\, and the School to Prison Pipeline. The PopUP! is the culmination of the work of the Women & Girls Grant Committee.   \nOur working definition of gender identity is a person’s internal\, deeply held sense of their gender. As such\, we define women and girls as individuals whose gender identity is as a woman or girl. For the Women & Girls grant program\, we intend to fund with an intersectional lens and aim to support organizations that foster more equitable opportunities for women and girls.    \nThis event is in person at the National Nordic Museum at 2655 NW Market St in Seattle\, WA from 5:00 to 7:15 PM on Tuesday\, December 6th. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are $50 each. Festive drinks and heavy appetizers are included with ticket purchase.   \nCOVID-19 vaccines are required and vaccine cards will be checked upon entry. DESCRIPTION:Join trainers from Cultures Connecting to widen your skill set and develop strategies to dismantle institutional racism. \nOne of the most common questions I get asked when facilitating conversations on race is “What can I do?” There are many things that can and should be done to dismantle institutional racism. Including learning to have effective conversations about racism. If we don’t talk about racism\, we can’t identify institutional racism in our organizations\, and therefore dismantle it. We all have different experiences and perspectives on race depending on our racial identity and where we come from. This often leads to tension and conflict in cross cultural interactions. Typical\, unspoken norms we use to engage in everyday conversations don’t work when talking about race. So\, what does? In this workshop participants learn seven tools to guide them in having effective conversations about race\, racism\, and race relations\, adapted from the work of Glenn Singleton.\nObjectives—Participants will:\n1) Learn tools and strategies for how to engage in cross cultural interactions.\n2) Individually identify what is most difficult for them in race conversations and commit to practicing a new way of engaging.\n3) Deepen their understanding of the need for explicit norms to guide our conversations. \nRegister here for Norms for Engaging in Courageous Conversations.\nThis online training is Tuesday\, November 1st from 1PM-4PM and will meet virtually on zoom. SUMMARY:Working in Tribal Communities 101 (OPEN TO ALL)
DESCRIPTION:This training is designed to provide base level knowledge of WA state tribes from indigenous trainer\, Kateri Joe. The main components will include tribal history in Washington state\, cultural diversity amongst tribes\, sovereignty\, self-identity activity and basic etiquettes in tribal spaces.  Materials will be sent out a few days prior to the training. \nKateri Joe is a member of the Swinomish tribe and Halalt First Nation. She was born and raised in West Seattle\, and attended West Seattle High School. This began her journey building her network in the Urban Native American community of Seattle. Her experience as in the West Seattle Native American club that lead the movement to change the school’s “Indian\,” mascot and feed her passion for social justice. Kateri has participated in the annual Canoe Journey for over 16 years\, dances both traditional Co-Salish and fancy shawl dancing. She attended Fort Lewis College\, in Durango\, CO obtaining a BA in Sociology and minor in Native American Indigenous Studies. Kateri moved back to Seattle to achieve her Masters of Social Work from the University of Washington\, Tacoma. Kateri began working at Treehouse as an Education Specialist in the Muckleshoot\, Enumclaw and Auburn school districts. She has recently transitioned into the Director of Special Populations position focusing on increasing culturally appropriate services for youth in foster care. \nThis training is open to the community.  This event is open to 100 guests. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Washington Women’s Foundation (WaWF) first annual Convening on September 21st\, 2022\, at Town Hall in Seattle! \nThe Convening is a call to action that every year will bring together speakers\, writers\, thinkers\, community leaders and essential nonprofit directors to educate the WaWF community on the most pressing concerns within our annual funding and learning themes. Our themes for Convening 2022 will be Education\, Healthcare\, and Climate and Agricultural Justice. \nConvening 2022 will kick off our 2023 Grantmaking cycle by featuring a variety of speakers who are reflective of and embedded in the communities they serve. Together\, we will learn from these experts\, changemakers\, and community organizers driving equitable\, transformative solutions to Washington’s most pressing challenges. \nConvening 2022 will be held in person at Town Hall\, with virtual access\, from approximately 9:00 am to 4:30 pm with lunch included and a reception afterwards. The Convening will include three ninety-minute panels with time for discussion during the day. The event is open to the full WaWF membership and the public\, free of charge. Masks are required at Town Hall\, unless eating or presenting on stage. DESCRIPTION:Come learn about our new Advocacy grant initiative and celebrate our grantees! Hear from members of the Advocacy Grant Committee about our learnings and from grantees about their work. \nWhen refreshing our grants\, our goal was to develop a funding framework that would contribute to lasting change by deepening community resilience\, strengthening community leadership\, supporting community-led advocacy\, and committing community-directed resources. The Advocacy Grant Committee reviewed applications from organizations that engage in advocacy as part of their work and are focused on one of our three priorities for 2022: Community Cultural Preservation\, Mental Health & Housing\, and the School to Prison Pipeline.  This committee focused on advocacy grantmaking\, not taking direct advocacy action. The grant committee is made up of WaWF members and community members. WaWF understands advocacy as work that seeks to advance an idea\, argue a position\, and/or enrich the debate about an issue of public concern. This could include education\, research\, litigation\, campaigning\, grassroots organizing\, or nonpartisan political work. \nThe Advocacy Grant Celebration will take place on Tuesday\, September 13th at 3PM. \nThis virtual celebration is open to all and will be recorded. DESCRIPTION:Join the staff and community of Nurturing Roots farm to learn about their produce\, perform some light volunteer work\, and participate in a group activity like Herb Seasoning or Tea making. \nNurturing Roots\, our 2021 Environment grantee\, builds community through farming and heals community through relationships. The heart of their work is a 1/4-acre urban farm in South Beacon Hill\, a richly diverse BIPOC community with limited access to healthy food choices.
