SUMMARY:Gender Norms: Race & Gender Responsive Funding Workshop (MEMBERS ONLY)
DESCRIPTION:Decades of research have found that young people who buy into rigid gender norms have lower life outcomes in a cluster of related areas that include basic health\,  education\, and economic empowerment. Similarly\, institutions tasked with young people’s welfare – juvenile justice\, foster care\, education\, and health – are also deeply gendered and gendering systems that anticipate\, reward\, and punish specific kinds of masculinity in boys and femininity in girls. \nGender affects every issue funders and grantees address and—combined with factors like race and class —is integral to an intersectional approach to structural inequality. Yet many grant programs ignore gender norms\, or else silo them as a LGBTQ+ issue.  Join this virtual\, open\, interactive discussion of the key terms\, ideas\, and findings behind intersectional approaches that reconnect race\, class\,  and gender. Concrete ideas for doing more race- and gender-responsive giving will be provided\, along with leave-behinds and group discussion. Participants in this workshop will understand: \n– Main gender terms and concepts \n– Intersectionality \n– How race and gender interact in structural inequality \n– Key research findings around race and gender \n– Ideas for more race- and gender-responsive funding \nWe are delighted to be joined by Riki Wilchins for this training. Riki Wilchins is Executive Director of TrueChild\, a network of researchers and experts that improves life outcomes for at-risk youth through race- and gender-responsive approaches. Riki has been profiled in The New York Times; TIME selected her one of “100 Civic Innovators for the 21st Century.” The author of six books on gender theory and politics\, Riki’s newest book for funders and nonprofits is titled\, “Gender Norms & Intersectionality: Connecting Race\, Class and Gender.” \nThis training is only open to members of Washington Women’s Foundation. If you’re a member and unable to make it\, a recording will be made available to all members that register.

SUMMARY:Conducting Effective Conversations (MEMBERS ONLY)
DESCRIPTION:The Collective Grants are the cornerstone of Washington Women’s Foundation’s (WaWF) work as a collective giving organization\, and a great way to connect with other members and learn about what’s happening in our community. This is the third full committee training for the 2022 Collective Grants Committee. Our focus will be to prepare for the Conversations Phase of the grant process.  \nHaving a conversation with a nonprofit as part of a grant process is an exciting\, energizing opportunity to more deeply understand their work. As a grantmaker\, how do you ensure that the conversation answers any outstanding questions? What can we as grantmakers do to set the tone of a positive and rewarding experience for everyone? By the end of this session\, participants will know basic etiquette and gain tools and strategies to minimize the effect of power dynamics between grantmakers and grant seekers.  \nAll WA Women’s Foundation members are welcome! Attendance is required for all 2022 Collective Grants Committee Conversation participants. This event and the Collective Grants Committee are only open to WaWF members. This event will be recorded.

SUMMARY:2022 Book Discussion: Bedlam by Kenneth Paul Rosenberg
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Washington Women’s Foundation’s (WaWF) Member Engagement Committee (MEC) selects a book for all members to read and discuss. In 2022\, MEC invites you to read Bedlam: An Intimate Journey into America’s Mental Health Crisis by Kenneth Paul Rosenberg and join us for a virtual discussion in March. \nBedlam addresses our society’s inhumane treatment and shaming of people experiencing mental illness and their families\, the lack of funding for hospital beds and research into new treatment options\, and failure to attract and train mental health professionals. Joining us for the discussion is Washington State Representative Tina Orwall who will lead a conversation on mental health in our state. \nBedlam is available for purchase at Amazon\, Barnes & Noble\, Random House\, and other retailers. We encourage you to consider purchasing it from Bookshop.org or from your neighborhood bookstore. You can also check for the book at your local library. Currently\, there are copies available at The Seattle Public Library (print and eBook)\, King County Library (print)\, Whatcom County Library System (print)\, and Pierce County Library System (print). \nThis event is open to the public and we invite WaWF members to bring a friend or two to join us. We also encourage members of our Collective Grants Committee to join the conversation\, especially those working on evaluating grant applications in our Mental Health & Housing funding area. Please email programs@wawomensfdn.org with any questions.
